African symposium on Higher Education: Strengthening the role of universities to produce homegrown solutions to Africa’s development challenges (February 24 -25 2021)
Agenda 2063 seeks to Galvanize and unite in action all Africans and the Diaspora around the common
vision of a peaceful, integrated and prosperous Africa, driven by its citizens and taking its rightful place in the world. To this end, Africa seeks fully developed human capital as its most precious resource, through sustained investments based on universal early childhood development and basic education, and sustained investments in higher education, science, technology, research and innovation, and the elimination of gender disparities at all levels of education.
Access to post-graduate education is expected be expanded and strengthened to ensure world-class infrastructure for learning and research and support scientific reforms that underpin the transformation of the continent. The challenges facing Africa if the continent is to put itself firmly on the path to a sustainable future include a fast-growing urban population, globalization and climate change, alongside a need to boost environmental governance. Africa has been an essential resource base for much of humanity for centuries, but has not benefited commensurately from that position. The situation of university education and skills development in Africa is such that innovation and strong governance is a key overarching issue that affects all other priority areas.
